Local Government Reform Commission Recommendations Announced

Following the release of the reform report the number of Council’s have been reduced from 156 to 72. The recommendation for Cardwell Shire Council was the following:-

Current local government area – Cardwell Shire Council
Boundary change – Amalgamate with Johnstone Shire
Class and composition – Undivided Regional Council with 6 Councillors + Mayor
Name – Cassowary Coast Regional Council

The recommendation for this council was for it to remain undivided, however, this council will be divided for the purposes of the 2008 quadrennial elections.


Local Transition Committee

The Local Transition Committee (LTC) will be the body responsible for overseeing the local level change processes required to successfully transition Cardwell Shire Council and Johnstone Shire Council to the new Cassowary Coast Regional Council in the lead up to the March 15th, 2008 local government elections.

Reform Timetable

Amendments to facilitate reform debated in Parliament April 2007
Local Government Reform Commission established & call for suggestions on new Council boundaries May 2007
Suggestions for new council boundaries close. 25 May 2007
Commission announces recommendations to the Minister on names, classes, new boundaries and electoral arrangements for local government areas within 30 days 1 August 2007
Parliament resolves new local government areas September 2007
Local Transition Committees established to guide reforms, appoint interim CEOs to manage change process & report to the Minister on progress of reforms October 2007 to February 2008
Next Local Government Elections 15 March 2008
